Terms and Conditions

Draft of 03.11.2026 · Effective from [date of publication]

These terms cover using DistroClaw Community, the free edition of DistroClaw. They are written to be read; if anything is unclear, ask us.

Draft for legal review. Text in highlighted brackets still has to be decided or filled in. Have this checked by a lawyer before publishing. Open points:

  • Which of these terms should apply to Community users, given the Apache License's own warranty disclaimer (sections 2 and 9).
  • Under the EU AI Act, the app must tell people they are talking to an AI.
  • Terms for the paid edition are added when DistroClaw Pro launches.

1. About these terms

DistroClaw is offered by [Legal entity name, address, country] ("we", "us"). These terms apply when you download, install or use DistroClaw Community. By installing or using it, you agree to them.

A "consumer" here means someone who uses DistroClaw mainly for purposes outside their trade, business or profession. Where these terms treat consumers differently, we say so.

2. Your license

DistroClaw Community is open-source software. You may use, copy, modify and share it under the Apache License 2.0, on any number of computers, for personal and business use, at no charge. That licence, not these terms, governs what you may do with the code; its source is at github.com/distroclaw/distroclaw. Sections 5 to 7 and 9 of these terms describe how we provide DistroClaw Community to you. [Counsel to confirm which sections should apply to Community users, given the Apache License's own warranty disclaimer.]

DistroClaw Pro, a paid edition, is coming soon. Its terms will be published here when it launches.

3. System requirements

Please check these before installing:

  • macOS 14 or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Intel Macs are not supported. The Windows version is coming soon.
  • At least 12 GB of free disk space for the installer, the app and its AI model.
  • How fast and capable the AI is depends on your computer's memory and processor. DistroClaw suggests the model that suits your computer; larger models need more memory and disk space.

4. Updates and help

We publish new versions, including security fixes, on GitHub. Installing them is up to you; if you do not install a fix we published, we are not responsible for problems it would have solved.

For help, use the documentation, open an issue on GitHub or email us; we reply when we can.

5. AI answers

DistroClaw is an AI system: its answers and summaries are generated by an AI model running on your computer, not written by a person.

  • AI answers can be incomplete, out of date or wrong, even when they cite sources and sound confident. Check important answers against the original documents.
  • DistroClaw does not give legal, tax, financial, medical or other professional advice. Do not rely on it alone for decisions that matter.
  • DistroClaw Community reads the folders you allow and does not change your files.

6. Acceptable use

Use DistroClaw lawfully. In particular, do not use it to create or spread illegal content, to infringe others' rights, to harass anyone, or to make decisions about people's access to jobs, credit, education, housing or public services without human review and your own legal assessment.

7. Your files

Your files, conversations and settings stay on your computer and remain yours. We cannot access, back up or restore them, so keep your own backups.

8. Third-party software

DistroClaw includes software and AI models from others, each under its own license, which also applies to you. These include the bundled AI engine (Ollama, MIT License), llama.cpp and related libraries (MIT and similar licenses), Qwen AI models by Alibaba Cloud and Gemma AI models by Google (Apache License 2.0 [confirm on the official model cards]). The models come from the DistroClaw model library. The full notices are in the app under Settings → About → Open-source licenses, and in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md in the source code; each model's license is shown in Settings → Model.

9. Warranty and liability

DistroClaw Community is free. We take care that it works as described on our website; if it does not, tell us and we will try to fix it.

Consumers in the EU and the UK keep all their statutory rights; nothing in these terms limits them.

We are liable without limitation for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and wherever mandatory law, such as product liability law, does not allow a limit. Otherwise, and as far as the law allows, we are not liable for slight negligence. We are also not liable for lost data, lost profits or indirect damage.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms for new versions or new legal requirements. New terms apply from the next version you install.

11. Governing law and courts

These terms are governed by the law of [country], excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). The courts at [place] have jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live. You can also bring proceedings in the courts there, which is also the only place we can sue you.
